Production Log

In today's Lesson i made a lot of progress with my magazine, i started on the front cover and all of the other pages so that there was something there that displayed what i wanted to portray.

In this image this is what i have done to my front cover so far, i crated a mast head called 'M' will the slogan 'Indie Music', which i thought was appropriate as it is short and snappy and tells the audience straight away the genre of the magazine. i also decided on an image that i would use as my font cover, i chose a mid-shot for the front cover as this is what my target audience stated they wanted in the survey.
For my contents page i have started to add the images and i have decided on a set template, which all i have to do is add all the text and the rest of the images and refine it. I have decided to go for something like this layout as it looks professional and tidy. I have stuck with a certain colour scheme of red white and black which you can clearly see within the contents page keeping it looking professional and sophisticated.
Here i have started on my first double page spread, which is going to go straight into the article, i chose this layout as it isnt too busy but still draws the readers attention. I chose a simple image that isnt too in your face and displays straight away that she is a music artist, i wanted to stick to the colour scheme in the article so that it links in well with the magazine.

This is the next double page spread, this will also contain the rest of the article. I chose to do a stereotypical thing that you see in a lot of magazines, with the artists initials in the background, but i thought that it made the page stand out from the rest as they are all quite similar.

This is my last double page spread which will include a fact file on the model and an inspiring quote.

PROPOSAL FEEDBACK

This is a video of two class mates that read over my proposal and told me what is good about my proposal document and what i should change to make it more engaging and more professional so that i can create a better overall product.

PROPOSAL

The purpose of writing a proposal is so that I can put down all my ideas of what I would like my magazine to be like. This is very beneficial for me when it comes to making my final product, as I can use the proposal as a reference to what I have decided to include in my final product and whether or not i've been following them.

Production Log

In todays lesson i carried on creating my contents page for my magazine, i started by adding in the 'Band index' information which included all the bands and artists that are featured within my magazine. I edited the font size and style etc. to make it suit my blog. I also finished creating my contact sheets of my first photoshoot, which i made into a slide share and placed on my blog and i have also booked another photoshoot for next week which will include different people which these photos will be used on my contents page.

Contact Sheets from photoshoot 1

These are the photos from my first photoshoot which i will be using within my magazine. I created these contact sheets on photoshop.

Model release

This form gives me permission to take and use photos of the my model Paige Berris within my magazine.

Production Log

Today i added the fake text so that i could see what the contens page with look like overall and i also added the picture for the subscribe image (which i wont actually use as it isnt my image and is irrelevant to my magazine). I can move forward with this as i know where all the text is placed so therfore i can start putting all the text i need within the magazine.
I also started to create the contact sheet on photoshop of my photoshoot that i had recently.

Production Log

In this lesson i carried on completing my contents page, i added the place where i am going to place the social media context, i have decided to place it in the bottom right hand corner because it is out of the way for all the more important things etc. I also added a box of where i would place an image of the front cover which it would look like for the people who subscribe to the magazine, to give them an insight of what they would be recieving and what theyre paying for.

Production Log

I started to make my magazine more original by moving around the image and the text. This is what I completed in todays lesson:
I haven't finished playing around with what I think has gone well and what hasn't so this isn't my final layout that I will use.

Production Log

In lesson I started to make the template for my contents page more original and unique and to suit my magazine I started by looking at magazines with good contents pages to give me ideas, I've tried a range of different things on my contents page to see what looks good and what doesn't, Ive looked at previous work that different AS students have done in previous exams again to give me a wider knowledge.

Production Log

In todays lesson i started off creating my magazine, I watched a tutorial which told me how to use different tools within InDesign to widen my knowledge to help me create a better magazine. I started off by creating the frame for my contents page. I watched a tutorial which told me how to frame it like a typical contents page, this is what it looked like:

I will change the layout of this to make it original and unique but for now i am going to use this structure/ template to plan my magazine. To make it more original i am going to move around the pictures and where i place the title of the page etc. hopefully in the next lesson i will move on to create the template of the contents page.

EXISTING MASTHEADS

this is my evaluation of two existing mastheads, i chose two completely different mastheads to evaluate so that i could compare them to see what was different about them and what was more effective

Production Log 8

I went straight to analyzing three double page spreads of my chose in this lesson, i chose three different double page spreads as i wanted to widen my knowledge of what was used in certain areas to make the magazine so popular (i chose to do three very famous music magazines e.g. Q so that i know that the magazine is successful). I have gone into a lot of detail with all my analyzing so that i get the best outcome and can refer back to this whilst making my final product and refresh my memory of why i chose to do these certain things and why i believe that they are effective.

Production Log 7

I started to analyse three content pages. I chose to do three similar ones as i liked the design and was most likely to use for my template, but they were all slightly different in unique and original ways such as the size and placement of the title, the color scheme, how they placed the text etc. but doing this task inspires new ideas of how to make my magazine look more professional and sophisticated and appealing to the audience. i go into a great deal of depth of analysis with my analyzing on the magazine as i believe that it will help me a lot when i have finished my product and i can look back to it and remind myself why i thought this was effective.

Production Log 6

In the recent lesson i carried on finishing my three analysis of the front covers i have chosen. I then moved on to the next part of the task which was to do an analysis of three contents pages within a music magazine i chose to do three completely different contents pages with different target audiences so that i could see the difference in the layout etc. which this would also help me when making my magazine so i can see what worked well. I will continue to do this task at home and the beginning of the next lesson until it is completed.

Production log 5

Todays lesson we started to analyse front covers from existing magazines i chose to do the front covers of the magazine q magazines and an nme magazine front cover as these are the kind of designs and templates that i want to use when creating my magazine. i analysed these by looking at the front cover very closely and in a lot of detail so that i didn't miss anything out. i mainly focused on the placing of the masthead and the sell-lines and the colour scheme and also what worked with it and how i could make my magazine look and be successful like these magazines.

Production Log 4

In this lesson I started to create my evaluation of my preliminary task. This had to be a total of 500 words, i used Microsoft word for this specific task. I asked my teacher and a few people within my class to give me feedback on my final product of the magazine which i incorporated within my evaluation i answered key questions which i thought would be most relevant and important. i will finish my evaluation at home and carry on with coursework that i need to work on.

Monday 22 September 2014

evaluation of my preliminary task

To create my overall final preliminary task I used the following software: Photoshop and InDesign. I made my front cover first and then my contents page, the magazines primary target audience was for the age 11-18 year olds and the social grade doesn’t matter as the magazine if going to be free, the secondary target audience is for the ages of around 30-50 as these are for adults e.g. teachers and parents.
For my magazine I stuck to the colour scheme of white black and blue and these are bold sophisticated colours which are frequently seen around Haydon School this would make the readers feel more comfortable reading it.
For my front cover I used the software InDesign for the layout and I cut out the main image on the Photoshop to give it a transparent background so that it would be easier to use whilst making my magazine. I started my front cover by first creating the masthead which I put into font ‘Felix Titling’ because it looks professional and sophisticated. i then placed the main image into Photoshop and cut out the background and then placed it into InDesign and I decided to place it in front of the masthead and to take up most of the front cover as it is one of the most important things. After doing this I started to play around with the background colour to see what went best with the main image and masthead but I chose that the plain white made it the magazine look the most professional but I placed the Haydon jigsaw-puzzle on the background to give the magazine some more character and be a little more appealing. For the sell-line I didn’t use many as I didn’t want to make the front cover look too busy so, I made the sell-lines a baby blue colour with a black border to make it stand out against the white background, I placed them where I did so that it looked tidy and professional. I placed the main sell-line at the bottom of the page and made this one bigger than all the other sell-lines because I thought that it was the most intriguing and thought that it was what the primary target audience would want to read the most.

For the contents page I again made this on InDesign and started off making it by producing the title which was simply ‘Contents’. I used the same font for the title as I did for the masthead on the front cover to keep the magazine looking consistent and professional. I added the logo into my title for the contents page to again make it look professional. I then decided to add the Haydon jigsaw-puzzle into the centre of the page and removed all the writing that was originally on it which I used Photoshop to do, and then placed the main contents within them, e.g. the sell-lines that were within the front cover. I then made an ‘id’ like image underneath the main contents to place the other contents, I decided to do this because I believe that it relates to the primary target audience and makes it clear the genre/purpose of the magazine etc.

video of how i made my preliminary task

Front cover and Contents page for preliminary task

Here is my preliminary task, i wanted it too look approachable and suitable for the younger teenagers (my target audience) i do believe i achieved this through the design of my magazine.

Prelim Design Ideas

Within the sketch of the front cover I wanted to give a general idea about what my magazine front cover is going to look like and where I'd place the sell lines etc. it gave me a basic template of what i would copy for my final preliminary task, so i wanted to make it as detailed as possible to make it easier for myself when creating the front cover.

Blog evaluation – Geeta Gohil (homework)

Geetas blog looks professional and sophisticated. The background colour/theme makes the blog more presentable but doesn’t draw too much attention away from the text and more important things.
Geeta uses many different ways to show her work and how she created things etc. she used sites such as slide share, issuu – to show here final magazine and evaluations and reviews etc. she used voki. Which is a site where you can use an avatar to replace your face and it also changes your voice so when you want to talk about previous work you’ve done she uses this and it still sounds sophisticated and doesn’t make it look unprofessional. She also added print screens of her work when she has done something.  She also used youtube, she videos herself, survey monkey etc.
Geeta has gone into a lot of detail on a lot of her posts,  this is really effective as it shows to the examiner that she puts a lot of effort into her work and shows how hard she works. And her personality also comes through within her posts. She made a lot of blog posts over her course which is also really good and effective as it again shows how hard she has worked.
Her blog is very easy to navigate as she has tagged most of her work so it can take you straight to where you want to go.
Geeta has also maintained a good colour scheme making her page not look messy and still looking really professional.
I hope that my blog looks like Geetas at the end of my course.

production log 2&3

In the last double media lesson I was purely working on finishing my front cover of the Haydon news magazine that I am creating, I did achieve this by the end of the lesson and even started on my contents page.

First of all I used a camera provided by the school to take a photo which could be used for my front cover. I went around the school searching for a student willing to do this, I finally found a young girl who wanted to take part, I briefed her about what it was for and that it was only for my class/course and she agreed. I took the photo and went back to class. I placed the photo into Photoshop and took away the background. This made it transparent and easier to use on InDesign. Once finished I moved it onto InDesign and in-larged it to fit most of the page. I then started to work on my masthead. I used a simple text and the Haydon school logo, this made it look professional and sophisticated. For the background I kept the main colour white and added in the Haydon puzzle as part of the background but I removed all the writing from it so he writing didn’t interfere with the sell-lines. I then started to place in the sell-lines that I done on my draft. I used all three of them but it didn’t look like there was enough so I placed two more in this made it look like there was a lot of content within the magazine and made it more presentable. For the text of the sell-line I used a light blue colour and italics to stand out against the navy blue uniform and the white background. So therefore my colour scheme for my magazine is black white and light blue.
I then started on my contents page by adding in the plain Haydon puzzle and putting some sell-lines in like my draft. And I wrote the title ‘contents’ but I need to adjust it to make it look right and finish putting in all the sell-lines.

Production Log

In today’s lesson we went over the course outline and made sure that we understood what we were going to be doing in AS media studies and in these next few terms.
We had to design the front cover and contents page of a magazine to promote Haydon school (doing this task helps us understand what we would have to do for the music magazine and give us a few ideas of what looks good).
My front cover is a mid-shot of a school girl. I thought that this was appealing as it displayed a formal, intelligent student so therefore it would appeal to the audience and in the background was Haydon School. The masthead is ‘Haydon News’ this is short and snappy, and the font would be a comic like font to appeal to the pupils. The title of this magazine also displays what the genre of the magazine is without thinking about it. I only put three sell-lines onto the front cover as I didn’t want to make it look too busy and untidy. The three sell-lines that I used were ‘interview with Mr. Jones’ ‘interview with the new year 7s’ and ‘results day’. These sell-lines aren’t too long and give you detail as to what you’re going to be reading and getting out of the magazine. The colour scheme of the front cover is going to be the Haydon colours (blue and white) and a bit of black where needed.
My contents page has a theme of objects from Haydon. The main page numbers for the sell-lines on the front cover were placed in a jigsaw puzzle which Haydon use to promote the skills e.g. perseverance, I thought that this was a good idea as the students would be able to connect to it and understand etc. the other sell-lines were placed in id-cards where the information of what’s on the page is placed where the name would be etc. and the image of what would be on the page was places on where the head shot would be of a student. I believe that this relates to Haydon and sticks to the theme.
I need to scan my drawings/ideas into the computer and start to make my magazine. Hopefully this will take me two lessons.
